Diagnostics

A diagnosis answers one question: what is actually wrong. Everything else — cost, options, whether to bother — follows from it.

Symptoms are not causes

A slow computer can be a failing drive, too little memory, a thermal problem, or software doing something it should not. Those have different fixes and very different costs, and they can look identical from the outside.

Replacing parts until the symptom stops is expensive and often leaves the real fault in place. Testing until the cause is identified is cheaper and ends with a machine that stays fixed.

What we test

What we test depends on what the machine is doing, but it generally means examining storage health, memory, thermal behaviour under load, power delivery, and the state of the operating system and its startup path.

  • Storage health and error history
  • Memory testing
  • Temperatures and behaviour under sustained load
  • Power supply and charging circuitry
  • Startup sequence and operating-system integrity

What you get

A plain explanation of what is wrong, what fixing it involves, and what we would do in your position. If more than one option is reasonable we will say so and explain the trade-off rather than presenting one path as the only one.

Asked at the counter

What does a diagnosis cost?

Diagnostic charges are quoted at the counter or through the main site, because they depend on what the machine needs. We do not publish a price here that might not be the one you are given.

Can you diagnose a fault over the phone?

We can often narrow it down, which helps you decide whether to bring the machine in. We will not commit to a cause without testing — a confident phone diagnosis that turns out wrong wastes your money as well as your time.
